Fire Door Inspection:
A fire door inspection consists of taking measurements of your fire door. Measurements, along with other information, like the doors serial number, location and protection time, must be included on the door inspection form. Fire doors are inspected to pass both visual and functional tests. For visual testing, we make sure the door is not damaged, and that it does not have holes. There is also a check for missing hardware. The door is then tested for functionality. Doors must close in an appropriately amount of time, and if the door is held open by a magnet, it must release when the fire alarm is tripped.
These Fire door inspections are required annually by State Law.
It is very important to point out that there are several different types of fire doors:
- Roll Down
- Swing Type
- Guillotine
- Overhead
- Side Sliding
- Stage Fire Curtains and Doors
Smoke Damper Inspections:
Dampers are usually located inside air conditioning and heating system duct work. Fire dampers are sometimes called smoke dampers, in either case they should activate anytime there is smoke or fire detected inside the building, or the air duct system. Some smoke dampers are connected directly to the fire alarm system and will close when the alarm system is activated. Other fire or smoke dampers are tripped by using a fusible link. A fusible link is a small piece of metal that will heat and burn away quickly if there is a fire, therefore causing the fire damper to close. Fire inspection for dampers should take place by a person who is well versed in these types of inspection practices.
Fire and smoke dampers are required to be tested when a building is new and every four years after that.
